American Black Bear
Divided-back chrome postcard

MESSAGE ON REVERSE:

TIME TO UNPACK
American black bear ready to unpack car for lunch in one of Yellowstone's many picnic areas.

As suggested by its title, this card from the late 1950s or early 1960s reflects an era when many tourists viewed bears in the parks more as playful pranksters than potentially dangerous wildlife. By the 1970s attitudes changed, laws against feeding bears were enforced, and human/bear encounters were greatly reduced.
