While the two families of travelers were in Los Angeles, Will Rogers flew out of that city for a trip to Alaska. They soon learned of Rogers' fatal plane crash on August 15, 1935;  Rogers was 43.

From Yellowstone the Markleys moved on to Utah, while their friends the Ellerys drove down to the Boulder Dam construction site on the Arizona-Nevada border. On the back of this photo is written: "Scene showing 'The Great White Throne' to the right in Zion National Park, Utah, 1935."
