In 1788 Joseph's father John sold the home place "John's Fancy" to Joseph.
On April 15, 1795 the ancient village of Salisbury in Elk Lick Township, Somerset County, Pa.was
plotted or laid out by Joseph Markley (then 44 yrs. old) on part of a tract of land surveyed to Joseph's
father John in 1786. The name of the tract was "John's Fancy." It contained 242 acres, and was located
on the east side of Castleman's River.
In 1815 the year the town of Ashland, Ohio was laid out, Joseph sold his holdings in Pa. and with his
wife Susanna, eight sons, and two daughters, traveled in a "fine" covered wagon, bringing with them 7
horses and 6 milk cows to Montgomery Township, Ohio.
They settled in a 12' x 12' cabin on the Christopher Trickel farm.
In 1816 when Joseph was 64 yrs. old he purchased 320 acres of land in what was to become Ashland
County. The deed was signed by President James Madison and was recorded by the justice of peace of
Richland County. This land was known as Markley land, and was later annexed to the city of Ashland,
Ohio.
Joseph and Susanna were buried in the old Markley Cemetery on part of Markley land, now a large part
of Ashland, Ohio. Other family members were also buried there, but as the city of Ashland grew the
Cemetery was all absorbed except for several graves.
The descendents of Joseph raised money and transferred the remains of these forefathers to Ashland
Cemetery in 1904. The graves were marked with a suitable marker, witness to the fact that beneath it lies
the remains of Joseph and other ancestors who lived good and useful lives.
